Stump Grinding Wollongong
Below-grade stump grinding across Wollongong so the patch can be turfed, paved or replanted without surface roots resurfacing later.
A stump left in the ground after a take-down causes more grief than people expect. It catches the mower, trips kids, blocks paving runs, and pushes lateral roots up under whatever you try to lay over the top. Wollongong's older inner-suburb blocks make this worse — narrow side gates, brick paving running close to the trunk, and hardwood species like spotted gum or blackbutt with stubborn lateral root flare.
The grinder choice depends on the access. A narrow walk-behind machine fits through a 900mm side gate and most of the older terrace blocks behind Mount Saint Thomas and Mangerton, which is the difference between a half-day job and not being able to start at all. For a Figtree front yard with kerb access, the bigger machine comes off the trailer and the same stump is done in a fraction of the time. Either way, the wood is taken below grade and the void is left ready to backfill.
Grinding depth is set by what's going in on top. About 150mm below grade is enough for new turf. About 250–300mm gives a paving job room for sand bedding without root regrowth pushing up under the pavers. New plantings want it deeper still, plus topsoil rather than raw chips in the hole.
Across Wollongong we see this work most often near Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area and out across the surrounding suburbs — rainforest and tall eucalypt forest rising directly above the city. Species we handle regularly include Illawarra Flame Tree (brachychiton acerifolius) and Sydney Blue Gum (eucalyptus saligna), each with its own pruning windows, failure modes, and council protections. Every quote we write factors in the species on site and the access route, not just the visible canopy.
What's included
- Site read — stump diameter at ground level, species, access path width
- Narrow walk-behind grinder for 900mm side gates and tight courtyard access
- Larger trailer-mounted grinder where kerb access or wide gates allow it
- Standard grind to about 250mm below finished grade, deeper on request
- Chips raked into the void, spread under garden beds, or hauled off as a line item
- Topsoil backfill quoted separately if the patch is being turfed or paved
- Multiple stumps at the one address discounted off the second one on
When you might need this
- → An old take-down has left a stump and surface roots breaking the lawn line
- → Pavers, slabs or pool surrounds are heaving where the trunk used to sit
- → The patch is going under turf, decking, paving or a new garden bed
- → The stump is sprouting suckers or holding moisture against the house slab
- → Three or four old stumps need cleaning off the block in one visit

Stump Grinding FAQs
How far below ground does the grinder take it?
Standard is around 250mm below finished grade — enough headroom for turf, paving sand or a shallow garden bed without root regrowth lifting things back up. Deeper grinds for new tree plantings or footing work are quoted on the spot.
Are the chips left on site or hauled away?
Your call. Leaving them costs nothing — most Wollongong customers want the chips piled under existing garden beds. Spreading them is a small extra. Loading them out and tipping them is a separate line on the quote covering the truck time.
Can the grinder fit through a narrow side gate?
Yes — the narrow walk-behind machine clears a 900mm gate and most of the older Illawarra courtyard access points. If the path is narrower than that we'll have a look on the quote visit; sometimes a temporary fence pull-down is cheaper than craning the machine over.
What about lateral roots heaving the paving line?
Surface roots running out from the stump can be ground out along the same pass while the machine is on site. The grind line is set to whatever depth the paving level needs to be reset cleanly — usually a separate price tied to how much lateral the roots are throwing.
